Mahalia Jackson met Sigmund Galloway, a former construction musician who lived in Gary, Indiana. Despite Jackson’s hectic schedule and constant companions in his entourage of musicians, friends, and family, he expressed his loneliness and began courting Galloway when he had free time. To a complete surprise to his close friends and partners, Jackson married Galloway in the living room in 1964.

Sigmund Galloway’s wife, Jackson, couldn’t stop coughing as she came home from a concert in St. Louis just weeks after their wedding. She was admitted to a hospital in Chicago. Jackson had been exhausted and short of breath since her European tour was postponed in 1952. These sudden outbursts became more common as her schedule got busier and expectations grew. The official diagnosis this time was cardiac fatigue and exhaustion, but Jackson’s doctors told her privately that She had had a heart attack and that sarcoidosis had spread to her heart.
Jackson’s recovery took an entire year during which She was unable to tour or record, eventually losing 50 pounds (23 kg). Jackson often felt depressed and frustrated with her weakness.
The couple later divorced in 1967. They were in a relationship for 3 years.
