Controversy | During the Vietnam War, Reita Faria visited Vietnam with Anglo-American actor and comedian Bob Hope. They went to celebrate Christmas with American soldiers stationed there; however, the Indian government did not fare well, as the Indian government supported the Communist government at the time. This created a big problem for Reita. Subsequently, this issue was also debated in the Indian Parliament. He has also reportedly received threats of confiscation of his passport. |

Facts About Reita Faria
Reita Faria is an Indian doctor turned model, best known for being the first Asian to win the Miss World title in 1966.
Reita Faria’s father worked in a mineral water factory and her mother owned a salon which gave her a middle-class education with an older sister, Philomena.
At the time of her studies, Reita Faria was known for her determination to become a doctor.
As well as being a deserving pupil, she was also known for her dress sense during her school and college years, an attribute that was often witnessed by one of her friends Cecilia Menezes.
She studied at St. Joseph’s Convent School in Mumbai. After graduation, she was admitted to Grant Medical College & Sir J.J. Groupe Hospitalier to pursue your M.B.B.S.
Reita Faria’s pageant journey began with an unexpected entry to Miss Bombay in 1966, followed by Eve’s Weekly Miss India1966.
Faria was selected to represent India at Miss World 1966 after her small but successful trip to competitions.
With a few lipsticks, a saree borrowed from acquaintances, and a pair of shoes from a friend, she stepped forward to enter the Miss World beauty pageant. But she was so tall that she couldn’t fit into them and had to buy a new costume and new shoes.
A 23-year-old medical student won the 1966 Miss World title, beating 50 other contestants from around the world and made history by becoming the first Asian to hold the title.
She also won the titles of “Best Swimsuit” and “Best Evening Dress” in the Miss World pageant in 1966. Her evening dress was a traditional sari.
During her tenure as Miss World, she had to visit different countries and do social work. But his visit to Vietnam during the war with actor and comedian Bob Hope gave him the controversy of a lifetime.
While in Vietnam, a photo of her signing the American soldier’s cap went viral, where she had gone to cheer on the American soldiers.
After completing her tenure as Miss World, she was offered many Bollywood movies and modeling projects, but she turned down those offers and decided to continue her medical education.
After completing his M.B.B.S. from Grant Medical College and Sir J. J. Group (India) of Hospitals, she went to King’s College Hospital in London to continue his education and began practicing there.
Reita was one of the judges for Miss World 1976 held in London and many other competitions during different rounds. Femina Miss India 1998 also had Reita Faria as one of the judges.
After her marriage to David Powell, she moved to Dublin, Ireland.
