Ahsaas Channa is the story of how a young boy, Jesus Christ, found his foster-father, a fisherman, on the banks of the river Ganga in India. He was sold by a merchant to the family of the woman who was his foster-father’s wife. Jesus Christ was brought up like any other child in that household, learning his lessons from his father and his foster mother. His foster-father treated him as one of his own, even feeding him with fish when he was born. But when the son-in-law found out that Jesus had become a Christian, he planned to poison him.
Ahsaas Channa was one of the greatest writers of Indian English prose and non-English prose. He wrote five books on the life of Christ and the Gita. After his death, his writings were compiled into a book called The Essentials of Indian History and Literature (also known as The Agamas). The book has had great significance for modern students of Indian History and for teachers of South Asian Languages.
Channa tells us about the life of this man called Jesus Christ. He is said to have been a carpenter in His younger days. It is said that on the occasion of Christmas, he went to a meeting of merchants where the woman of the house presented Jesus Christ with a silver earring. Channa relates the story of the merchant who gifted this item and how it was told to Jesus Christ. He tells us about the faith which he and the woman of the house had in Jesus Christ.
There are two types of stories told in this book. One type is historical and the other is mythological. The historical narrative has a beginning and an end, while the other narrative starts with a point of view and tells a continuous tale from that point. So we learn about the early life of Jesus Christ and the time from when he was born till he went to the cross. We also learn about his mother and the family.
After telling us about his life, he goes on to describe his death. Channa also tells us about what happened to his mother after he went to the cross. After he was crucified, Mary Magdalene took him to the garden of Gethsemani and lived with her for some days. It is here that we get to know about the birth of Jesus Christ.
Channa also includes in his work a separate and very interesting chapter on the life of Paul, the first follower of Christ. He describes the conversion of Paul from a Cynic to a believer and also gives us an account of how he became a Christian. In addition, Channa tells us about the life of John the Baptist and how he was afflicted by a demon. Finally, he describes the life of Stephen, a great Christian leader. All in all, this is a very interesting read that even those not interested in religious matters will enjoy.
This biography also includes the stories of a man called Ahasuerus and a woman named Dido who were leaders in both the Ahasueran and Essenes movements. The life of Ahasuerus is particularly interesting as he tries to understand what motivated the founder of Islam, Muhammad. We are also introduced to the life of Paul, who is probably the most influential figure in the history of Christianity.
I found that I was thoroughly entertained by this relatively short and well-written biography. Although the book is quite lengthy, it’s a very easy read. Reading it felt like I was just reading about two of the great characters Channa has included in his work. I would definitely recommend this to a Christian student of religion and history.
